Giovanni Soldini began sailing when he was 15 and crossed his first ocean at 17. He became the first Italian to complete a solo circumnavigation in the BOC Challenge. In his first BOC Challenge in 1994-95, Soldini came in second in Class II. In 1996 he won the Europe I Star solo Trans-Atlantic race and set a new record.Soldini lost his best friend and co-designer of his new Open 60 FILA to the sea. Ellen MacArthur not only sailed into the record books by becoming the youngest person and fastest woman to sail around the world alone.
